Want to get away from the resorts and explore the true authentic life of the Dominican Republic? Then this tour is for you! In small groups accompanied by a local guide you will visit the surrounding areas of Bayahibe as well as the third largest city in the country, La Romana, and will learn about both the rural and the city life of the locals as well as the making and harvesting of some of  the country’s main export products, such as sugar cane, cocoa, coffee and cigars.

Starting early in the morning you will journey deep into the rural countryside and visit the Bayahibe village. Afterwards, you will head to one of the local cigar factories and discover all the secrets of this trade from its owner. Here you will have the possibility of trying out and buying local cigars accompanied by the famous vitamin R (rum). Next up – the sugar cane fields. Here you will see the locals at work and learn all about the making and harvesting of one of the main agricultural products of the Dominican Republic – the sugar cane. Don’t forget to taste one, freshly cut! Here you will also visit the local Haitian village. Here you will explore the lifestyle of this largest ethnic minority of the country. You will also visit a local school where you can meet the kids. By the way, they just love the attention! Greet them, play with them, take pictures and maybe even bring them some gifts! Who wouldn’t love that?!

Afterwards, you will drive to the local ranch where you will dive into the processes of the making and harvesting of cocoa and coffee and get the chance to taste and purchase these products in their pure organic form.

Once done with the countryside part of the trip, you will head to La Romana to explore the city life of the Dominicans. You will ride through the town exploring the surroundings and stop at the local supermarket and fruit and vegetable markets where you can buy local products for a much more reasonable price as opposed to what you encounter in the resort area.

After that you will then return to your accommodation in Bayahibe.

• Tips and other extras.

What to bring:

• Money in cash in case you decide to buy some of the local cocoa and coffee products at the ranch or anything else during the stop at the local supermarket and fruit and vegetable market in La Romana;
• Sunscreen.

Itinerary:

8:30am – departure from Dominicus Americanus.

8:40am – arrival at Bayahibe village.

9:05am – arrival at the cigar factory.

9:35am – arrival at the sugar cane fields. Haitian village and a visit to the local school.

11:10am – arrival at a local rancho. Coffee and cocoa plantation.

11:40am – arrival at Lo Romana.

12:05pm – arrival at a local market in La Romana.

1:00pm – departure for Bayahibe.

1:30pm – arrival at Dominicus Americanus.
